Julie Robenhymer: The Curious Case of Miles Wood

Ok so I haven't been paying much attention to college and uni hockey and how it works for very long so I'm curious as to how all this happened for wood? Is he a really late bloomer and in a year became really good ? Like why is he not already in uni or college is he a late birthday or something ? I just don't understand why it seems like this is so weird or it doesn't happen often and if that's the case then why now with him ? Lol aren't most kids done high school at 17-18 ? Is he doing the loser lap ?

LOL we all had the same questions!

His birthday is in mid-September and the school system he started Kindergarten at said he missed the cut off and had to wait a year. He had considered accelerating this summer and starting at BC this year, but he and his family wated him to have the senior year experience, etc. so in the end it will be just like he had gone to the USHL and will start college as a 20yo freshman. He really can't be considered a late bloomer because he was drafted...18 months ago!! If you read the blog, you know that USA thought about inviting him to Lake Placid and then decided against it because he'd still be playing in high school, but then seeing him this fall, he kept giving them a reason to want to see more. He's here to answer some questions and see how he fits in with this caliber of player and to his credit, he doesn't look a bit out of place!! Tonight is a big opportunity for him!

nice write-up Julie,

I remember watching some of the Devils camp videos and he definitely did stand out there with his speed/skill...but then again that may not be saying much compared to what NJD has in their other F prospects
